Abstract

The objective of this paper is to examine current privacy protection legislation for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) transmissions and services in both the US and the European Union and to highlight and discuss concerns arising from such legislation. It first describes the functionality of VoIP and how privacy can be threatened by the technology. It looks at the New Regulatory Framework (NRF) which is the principle instrument for the protection of VoIP services in Europe and highlights the areas for concern within the framework. It then goes on to look at VoIP privacy concerns from the United States perspective. Finally, it concludes by discussing the issues that still need to be addressed in the current legislation of both the US and the EU and makes some recommendations on how to improve the current situation of VoIP.
