Abstract
This article engages with questions about the role of the criminal justice system in responding to sexual assault. The author demonstrates the limitations of policies based on deterrence, and sentencing by reference to statistics on the processing (or not) of reported sexual offences in NSW. She also challenges the assumption that punitive policies allied with law and order rhetoric provide improved safety for women.
