Abstract

This article, which is part of a series on campus risk management issues, explores the number one issue on most college campuses: high-risk alcohol use. The article urges campuses to use the Core survey to understand student drinking patterns; it also encourages universities to use environmental-management techniques and to consider adopting the Facilitator Model for student-university relations. The aritlce also discusses specific initiatives that have proven effective on other campuses; these include risk-management teams, presidential leadership initiatives, longitudinal social-norming campaigns, faculty and parental involvement, education programs, transportation and pedestrian safety programs, law-reform initiatives, conduct codes and alcohol policies, and alternative hours and activities.
