Abstract

The economy of Kazakhstan is currently dominated by the export of raw materials. In recognizing the need for economic diversification, the president Nursultan A. Nazarbayev has instituted the Kazakhstan 2030 program. One prong of this program proposes to build on the tourism potential within the country, thus diversifying the economic base of Kazakhstan and enriching the government's tax base. Tourism the number one export earner in the world in 2004. Is the country prepared to take advantage of its history, natural resources, and unique culture to facilitate tourism? In this paper, the writers examine the tourism efforts made by Kazakhstan, in particular the governmental efforts in promoting tourism and their answers to the various obstacles to the promotion of tourism in this former Soviet Union state. These answers are discussed with alternative solutions suggested.
