Abstract

The publication of the first Canadian legal text on victims' rights is a significant event. All those interested in criminal justice should take notice. Joan Barrett's Balancing Charter Interests is an important development that affirms the importance that victims' rights have had in regard to criminal justice in the last two decades. Its title undersells its ambition, which goes well beyond the Charter to provide a review of "the statutory provisions and case law at various stage of the criminal process as it relates to victims of crime and other third parties".
