Abstract

This essay uses the occasion of reflection on Marc Galanter's work to analyze the ingredients for authority in socio-legal research. It focuses particularly on the recent enthusiasm for Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) within law schools, and the implications of this new brand of socio-legal scholarship for the quality and authority of the field.
