Abstract

This course takes a strategic perspective on social change. It asks how emerging leaders - social entrepreneurs and strategic philanthropists - can stimulate systemic change through local interventions and collaboration. The course was developed and taught by Maximilian Martin in the IOMBA program for the 2008 fall semester. Combining their passion to solve social issues with an entrepreneurial outlook on life, social entrepreneurs find innovative ways to leverage scare resources in the pursuit of social value. To be practical, the course deploys a variety of case studies. The social enterprise action lab is a learning feature of this course. Through the years, practical projects have been a key driver of students' learning in the course, which is now running in its sixth year. This year, we will therefore further expand the practical applications of the course, using the formula of a "social enterprise action lab." In the context of the lab, students will initially be given the opportunity to conduct projects in three areas: environment and sustainability; social change technologies; and socially entrepreneurial approaches to finance.
