Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for the strategic management of knowledge resources by analysing various research literatures. Also, it aims to extend the traditional financial focus of organisational performance to include knowledge resources and also provide guidance to achieving organisational sustainability. Finally, the paper contributes to ongoing policy debates about suitable frameworks for the managing and reporting of knowledge resources.
Design methodology/approach: The paper draws from various literatures and via analysis and critique establishes several propositions that form the basis for the Strategic Management of Knowledge Resources (SMKR) framework. The approach is to review contemporary international IC frameworks and determine their strengths and weaknesses and from this a new model is developed.
Findings: The paper concludes that contemporary international intellectual capital (IC) frameworks do not include several important characteristics. The proposed SMKR framework focuses on organisational sustainability and provides new understandings as to how the organisation can engage with the following elements: stakeholder engagement, establishment of a dynamic view of knowledge resources management and a focus on emergent strategies. It suggests that policy developments in the area of knowledge resource management, measurement and reporting should include these important elements.
Originality/value: The main implications of this paper are that current contemporary IC frameworks are limited and that to overcome these limitations an engagement with relevant aspects of the literature pertaining to strategy, performance measurement and management of IC is necessary.
