Abstract
Although at the theoretical level, there is a correlation between under-five mortality and per capita income, empirical work on this relationship is mixed with some studies stressing the lack of correlation whereby an increase in per capita income does not lead to a corresponding decrease in under-five mortality. To others there exists a relationship. Is there a correlation between under-five mortality and per capita income? Does this relationship vary among countries? Using data from twenty countries in Africa, we find that: (a) There is a correlation between under-five mortality and per capita income and (b) The strength of the relationship varies among countries..
