Abstract
This paper analyzes the way in which the classical study of figure anticipated the development of modern construction grammars, and the ways in which construction grammar could be extended and improved by integrating some of the research initiatives of the classical study of figure. The article provides as an example an analysis of what the author has previously called the XYZ construction.
