Abstract
This article addresses the effect of temporary employment on employee solidarity. From an embeddedness perspective, we argue that solidarity is influenced by social context. Two forms of embeddedness that are of special importance are temporal and network embeddedness. The temporal embeddedness hypothesis posits a curvilinear relation between employee solidarity and year of employment. The network embeddedness hypothesis states that employee solidarity is positively related to formal and informal network characteristics. Using data for 262 PhD. students, multilevel analyses support both these hypotheses. Year of employment has a curvilinear relation with solidarity, and formal network embeddedness (as measured by the research orientation of the faculty) and informal network embeddedness (as measured by good relations with colleagues) are positively related to the solidarity of PhD. students.
