Posted: 26 Aug 2009
Date Written: April 1, 2009
Abstract
This annual collection lists and describes briefly articles about maritime law published outside the four American journals dedicated to maritime law. Although a few are dated 2007 or 2009, all were published during the 2008 calendar year by American scholarly or professional legal publications. Highlights of this year’s collection include discussions of choice of law, jurisdiction, and the doctrine of forum non conveniens. Other major themes include maritime security, both at sea and in port, fisheries management, and the tension between the laws of salvage and those intended to protect the world’s cultural heritage. A recurring theme is the increasing impact of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the effect of the ongoing refusal of the United States to ratify the convention.
