Abstract

In this article, Professor Finkelman discusses the stigmatization and criminalization of interracial sex and love in the southern colonies. Professor Finkelman focuses primarily on the Virginia colony as the first of the American colonies, but notes that the principles can be applied to most of the southern colonies. Unfortunately, the legacy and many of the laws criminalizing interracial sex and marriage continued from the colonial era well into the twentieth century.

Keywords: iterracial sex, interracial love, interracial marriage
