Abstract

The relationship between the presence of nationalscientific capabilities and technological productivity is examined. The degreeto which science-technology relatedness is positively associated withtechnological performance when scientific capabilities are brought into theequation is also investigated. The total number of publications in a specific domain for a given country isused as an indicator of scientific performance, while technological performanceis measured by the number of patents produced between 1997 and 2001. Analysisof the data, which are drawn from the Thomson Scientific Science Citation Indexand the United States Patent and Trademark Office, suggests that nationaltechnological performance is indeed positively associated with scientificcapabilities. Countries with high levels of technological performance (as measured by theamount of patent activity) generate higher numbers of publications and arecharacterized by institutions that exceed publication volume expectations.Considering that the latter observation is true of companies as well asresearch institutions engaged in scientific activities, it appears that thesharing of scientific capabilities by multiple organizations is likely toproduce positive results.
