Abstract
Identifies determinants of startup activities and newbusiness success, and develops a holistic conceptualization of regionalentrepreneurship dynamics. A review of the literature leads to the argumentthat attributes of the entrepreneur, the characteristics of the startup, andgeographical and industrial factors are determinants of entrepreneurship. Data from a 2001 survey of 462 business founders in Cologne, Munich, andStuttgart, and interviews conducted with 18 of the founders from the sample, are used to address the research questions. The data support the contentionthat holistic approaches in entrepreneurship research are necessary becauseentrepreneur attributes, firm characteristics, and the geographical environmentall influence entrepreneurial activities. The influence of these determinants on entrepreneurial processes may bedirect or indirect. The findings suggest that scholars and policy-makers shouldpay more attention to the contexts in which entrepreneurship takes place.(SAA)
