Abstract
Entrepreneurial activity and economic growth withinpost-Soviet Russia is studied by using a rich regional data set to obtain astatistical characterization.Russia was considered a good source forevaluating links between entrepreneurial activity and growth because of theunusual variation in initial conditions, the adoption of policy reforms, andentrepreneurial activity observed across its large number of regions in theearly stages of transition. The data analyzed for the study was drawn from 70of Russia's 89 regions. The entrepreneurial activity was quantified bymeasuring the number of legally registered, small, private enterprises in placein each region as of December 1995 (relative to the regional population). Theresults show the existence of a statistically and quantitatively significantrelationship between regional entrepreneurial activity and subsequent economicgrowth. Findings indicate a significant relationship between entrepreneurialactivity and growth. The intra-national evidence complements evidence of theimportance of entrepreneurial activity for growth that emerged frominternational comparisons of transitional economies. Considering Russia'srelatively poor showing in these international comparisons, it was surprisingto see such a strong and vibrant statistical relationship in this study.(JSD)
