Abstract

If the role of the quality foundry professional has been challenged in the last decade, particularly in the last few years, it has been a Change for win-win situation. This is in tune with Stephen Covey’s 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,' and also with 'Eight Leadership Principles of Quality Management' (Thareja, 2002). The careers in Quality thus promise a similar potential of win-win. The benefits of Quality training are plethoric, for all. The student as a job seeker, the industry entrusting him the operations for a unique rejuvenation, the society for reduced costs, the eco-system for a lower load and so on. It is win-win for all, more so for a holistic development of the Quality engineer.

The customary quality foundry engineer was an inspector who aggressively resisted the defects in a product passes through its various manufacturing steps while he controlled and assured the quality in full or bits as the defects continue to slip. The challenges continued to repair the castings until they were shipped. Not now. The techno-business paradigms mandate catching the evil right at the time of their evolution itself. Now the responsibility of Quality Casting has been dispersed to be more professionally oriented- through all stages and all people, making quality an everyone's job. However, dividing responsibility is an excellent idea, in a competitive business sense. While each employee can take pride of ownership and responsibility for doing a job, correctly the first time, the on-the-job learning makes Quality global, and the endeavours local.
