Abstract

ACPO, the Association of Chief Police Officers have recently reviewed their National Working Practices in Facial Imaging. The new guidelines are due to be released at the Working Group’s Annual Conference in September 2003.

Significant changes to the manual reflect new research findings conducted in British universities and subsequent policy amendments by the prosecution services. Two areas involving electronic technologies have received a major review: firstly, facial mapping, a task whereby digitised images are compared using various techniques; and secondly the use of multiple facial composite likenesses, or Photo-Fits.

Keywords: face idenfitication, facial mapping, composites
