Robust economic growth after the initiation of economic reforms and very slow growth of employment has been a cause of concern. Inability of fast growing sectors to generate employment has also been well exposed. Agriculture despite growing at a very slow rate in post reform period still holds on to its position as a source of living for majority of the people.

The paper while noting the all India trend of negative effect on women's participation in rural workforce present the observations about the attitude of the workers in a village in western Uttar Pradesh. Paper traces the conditions which if occur in other parts have the potentiality to render agriculture as least preferred occupation.
