Abstract
Debriefing is an important phase in gaming simulations. It is the activity where participants make the transfer from the experiences they acquired during the simulation to real life situations, or in other words, it is the phase where the actual learning has to take place. Therefore, due attention should be given to design and practice debriefing if simulations are to reach their objectives. Our central theses is that the optimal shape of debriefing depends on these objectives. In this paper we propose a simple classification for gaming simulations, based on the objectives of a simulation. In each of four types of simulations that can be distinguished according to this classification, the debriefing serves different purposes for which specific requirements can be formulated.
