Abstract

This paper is a chapter for an e-book to be published by Melbourne University Press. The book deals with the intersection of the local and global by looking at 8 cities where local and global forces come together. The working paper is thus about Coal Harbour, located on the north shore of the downtown peninsula in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is a site rich in history, being the original terminus of Canada’s first trans-continental railroad. The area, though a rail yard for its first century, is very central situated short walking distances from the heart of the Central Business Core and Stanley Park (see map below). The vital waterfront and central location endow the area with exceptional development capacities, which are being rapidly realized.

Keywords: Vancouver, Coal Harbour, Cities and globalisation, Global cities, Urban redevelopment
