Abstract
This essay is an introduction to a symposium issue of the Albany Law review entitled “Family” and the Political Landscape for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People. The essay sketches the development of gay legal theory and rights in three broad areas: legal academia, law, and politics. This brief introduction provides a context for considering notions of family in the articles that follow.
