Abstract

The USA PATRIOT Act was enacted on an accelerated schedule in response to and less than two months following the horrific events of September 11, 2001. The Act restructured many existing laws involving intelligence gathering, criminal law and procedure, and immigration practices. While passed nearly unanimously by both houses of Congress, the Act was and remains controversial throughout society, but particularly within the library and information communities.
