Abstract
The paper addresses the question of whether there is a specifically European business model in addition to the purportedly universal American model of corporate governance. The empirical data suggest an affirmative answer. The preponderant trend is that of an intra-European convergence of business models and management styles. Overall, the European business model has performed well and has, in certain sectors, been successfully adopted elsewhere. Its greater adaptability to different environments, which distinguishes it from an American model of corporate governance of expectedly universal applicability, makes it a good candidate for export. The paper emphasizes that behind an apparent homogeneity among SMEs there exists a plurality of successful types of organizations and profitable corporate strategies.
