Abstract
This Chapter provides an analysis of the legal classification, regulation and protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand, with particular emphasis on the Historic Places Act 1993, the Resource Management Act 1991, and the Protected Objects Act 1975, which gives domestic effect in New Zealand law to the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of the Ownership of Cultural Property 1970, and the UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects 1995.
This Chapter focuses on the special status of Māori cultural heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand, on the protection of wāhi tapu (sites sacred to Māori), and on the protection and misappropriation of mātauranga Māori (traditional knowledge).
