Abstract

This paper focuses on India’s emerging role in global bioinformatics market. Bioinformatics plays a central role in the development of bio-industries in general, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical diagnostics. Bioinformatics is used in many areas of life sciences such as drug discovery, molecular medicine and microbial genome applications. Bioinformatics is growing as an independent discipline and is a fundamental to the growth of biotechnology. Paper explains meaning of bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is an integration of mathematical, statistical and computer methods to analyze biological, biochemical and biophysical data. Simply put it is the marriage between biology and information technology (IT). This paper also highlights current size of global bioinformatics market and India’s present and future market share.

Bioinformatics is a next sunrise sector for India. It has all potentials to become replica of Indian IT success story and become a global leader in this high tech, high value sector. As India has achieved a status of global software powerhouse, it is expected to play a key role in the global bioinformatics market. India has all basic inputs for dominant and thriving bioinformatics sector. India’s major strengths are biodiversity, basic life science research, biotechnology (BT) experience and expertise. With such complementary competencies in BT and IT, India is well positioned to exploit the upcoming bioinformatics wave. This paper underscores India’s major strengths and resource based competitive advantages which can be capitalized to make India as a global bioinformatics hub.
