Abstract

This paper was presented at the first Sustainable Companies workshop in Oslo in January 2010, and is forthcoming in the first of two Sustainable Companies special issues of the International and Comparative Corporate Law Journal. The paper starts with the concept of sustainable development in a German perspective embeddening it in the broader framework of sustainability activities at international and European level. The paper proceeds with an elaboration on the role of the management board in the governance structure of a German Aktiengesellschaft and the interest(s) of the company with respect to the goal of sustainable development. The specific company law issues addressed are supplemented by some fundamental deliberations on German company law in particular.
