Abstract

The present booklet provides a concise, yet comprehensive, survey of the intellectual property rights involved in biotechnologcial research. Legal scholars, who are not familiar with the technical-scientific aspects, will find an introduction to the basics and applications of biotechnologcial research in chapter I, which focuses on biotechnology. Chapter II, which deals with patent protection for biotechnological inventions in Europe, has been conceived so as to include a number of general principles of patent law in order to make this matter more accessible to biologists, chemists and other scientists. Ethicists and philosophers might be especially interested in the final chapter which reflects upon the ethical dimension of the patenting of life and suggests some future developments in this area.
