Abstract

The Republic of Ecuador is among the few Latin American countries without a national competition law or policy. Although lately there have been intense efforts aimed at providing the Andean Community member countries with effective competition laws and policies, the fruits of those activities in the Republic of Ecuador are limited. This article examines these efforts, attempts to explain the causes of the difficulties of implementing a competition policy in Ecuador, the reasons why such efforts should continue and the general lines that should be followed by legislative initiatives aimed at giving Ecuador a plausible competition policy in the current international context with potential for success in the particular Ecuadorian political, social and economic situation.
