Abstract

Waste in the health care system might seem like a strange topic for a pension journal. However, waste is directly connected to retirement security: to the extent that waste increases the cost of health care, (1) employers have less money available for retirement plan contributions, (2) working individuals have less available resources to save for retirement, because they are paying more than they should in premiums, deductibles, and co-pays, and (3) retired individuals need more income to enable them to pay out-of-pocket health expenses.
