Abstract
This paper examines the impact of the geographic diversity of a firm’s search on research productivity. Specifically, we study the impact of different types of geographic search strategies on a technology venture’s ability to develop new products in different geographic regions of varying levels of munificence. Our results indicate that a firm’s geographic context moderates the impact of different strategies on the firm’s research productivity. In particular, firms in munificent local environments benefit from localized search, as indicated by strong local co-authorships, while firms that are not located in munificent regions benefit from a geographically diverse search strategy.
