Abstract

Using verbal protocol and conjoint analysis, this study examines how stakeholders assess organizations in terms of the likelihood of entering into a supportive relationship with it. We find that stakeholder support depends on its perceptions of an organization’s liability and asset of newness-liability as lack of maturity (age, cognitive legitimacy, reliability, and accountability) and asset as youthfulness (affective congruence and strategic flexibility). We conclude with theoretical implications for scholars and practical implications for resource acquisition in various contexts of entrepreneurship.
