Abstract

This paper is aimed at assessing philosophy as a tool for sustainable development in Nigeria educational system. In the past, there was seemly intractable argument on the relationship between philosophy and education, and as it helps in developing education and educational system in the country. While to another, philosophy transcends the entire facets of education and societal life. It was the view of many scholars over the years in Nigeria, that the best tool for effective sustainable development in Nigeria educational system, and for effective teaching and learning is experience arising from philosophical inquiry. It becomes glaring that no educational system in the country can stand the test of time without a philosophical foundation. By so doing, the paper highlights the concepts of philosophy and development, developmental problems in Nigeria, the external influences in Nigeria’s underdevelopment and how philosophy can assist in sustainable development of Nigeria.
