Abstract

Drawing from sources such as popular media, queer theory and post-colonialism, this paper discusses some of the expressions of patriotism paired with violence against women and homosexuality that appeared after 9/11. The paper critiques how concepts of masculinity were shored up with hostility to women and gay men. This in turn helped authorize and inform sexualized violence against subordinate groups such as Arab men and homosexual individuals.
