Abstract

This paper presents an overview of corporate social responsibility as a field of scholarship. It describes some of the definitional debates in the literature and explores some of the ambiguities associated with a field in a state of emergence such as CSR. Finally it describes our attempt to map the field into meaningful categories. It was published as chapter one in the three volume "Major Work" on Corporate Social Responsibility, edited by Andrew Crane and Dirk Matten and published in 2007 by Sage.

Keywords: corporate social responsibility, theory, definitions, globalization
