Abstract

This paper considers the right to education to be one of the channels through which national and international divides can be minimised and understanding promoted. The thesis of paper is that although efforts have been made to ensure that children of school going age access primary education, not all children have accessed this basic education. Secondly, children are often provided with tuition while other rights like the right to food, to a decent learning environment, to participate in decisions on issues that concern them and the like are left at bay. This implies that the right to education in some Uganda is an unfinished business. Thirdly it is contended that education is a vital tool in people empowerment. If all people were well educated and empowered, national and international understanding would be a matter of course. In view of all that, it is recommended that the state together with the international community like the commonwealth should ensure that all aspects of the right to education are attained.

Keywords: right to education, national and international divides, unfinished business, international community, commonwealth
