Abstract

This paper investigates opportunities and obstacles facing new environmental ventures. It does so first through a review of prior work on the growth of new ventures, then through an examination of new empirical research from the UK. Evidence from a database of 73 micro-SMEs allows a comparison between different environmental sectors and identifies obstacles particular to each sector which affect the ability of new ventures to create and capture value. Richer detail is then gained through nine case-profiles. These investigate the role of access to finance and business support in venture growth, along with how new ventures perceive opportunities and obstacles in the innovation process. By way of conclusion we identify some of the implications for environmental innovation policy that emerge from analysis of this data.
