Abstract
Looking back to the UN Declaration on the New International Economic Order of 1974, Res. AG 3201 (S-VI), related documents and the history thereof, it is clear that none of its principles acquired the status of binding legal rules. However some of those principles have remained relevant in the different market-based international economic order of the 1990's, especially as to North-South trade relations. The UN Millenium Goals, in focusing on human development, poverty and empowerment beyond national borders and bridging differences in economic development, also owes ideas and concerns to the NIEO "precedent".
