Abstract
As genetic databases continue to yield new insights and inventions, the commercial incentive to conflate race and genetics may be hard to resist. This article discusses the move to use race as a genetic category to obtain patent protection and drug approval. The article does not attempt to present a definitive characterization of the meaning of race and/or ethnicity, but is concerned more with how these terms are being invoked in biotech patents.
Keywords: Medicine, drug, race, ethnicity, African Americans, BiDil, heart failure, genetics, patents
