Abstract

This Article explores the tensions inherent in nonprofit union organizing. The growth of nonprofit unionization has laid bare the complementary aims of nonprofits and unions, but also class divisions within nonprofits. Arguing that social service nonprofits play the dual institutional role of advancing society's highest ideals and serving as governance structures mediating the vagaries of state social spending, the author calls for industry-wide unionization as the only way to harmonize these two roles.
