Abstract

This paper addresses the relation between research performance measurement based on journal quality assessment on the one hand and direct citations on the other hand as a function of the age of the article or the author under consideration. If the connection between both measures of research output becomes stronger with growing age of the article or the author, journal quality assessments may serve as an indicator for future citation success in business administration. In this context, journal quality is determined according to the approach of the German newspaper Handelsblatt (HB) and according to the so-called VHB-Jourqual2 (VHB-JQ2) developed by the German Academic Association for Business Admi¬nistration. Citations are counted according to the Social Sciences Citations Index/Science Citation Index Expanded by Thomson Reuters and Google Scholar (GS) in connection with the software Publish or Perish by Anne-Will Harzing. We look at single papers by German scholars and single German authors and examine the relationship between the number of citations of single papers as well as single authors and the corresponding journal quality assessments. Up to medium-term time horizons this relationship becomes closer on both the level of single articles and of single authors. However, for rather old papers and authors this connection is finally getting weaker again.
