Abstract

This short essay is written for inclusion in a set of essays all written in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of publication of The Calculus of Consent. These essays are purposefully short, and are meant to be personal statements of the significance of The Calculus to the author and not standard academic papers. This essay offers some personal reflections combined with a brief treatment of scale-free networks and democratic oligarchy as recent themes in my work that draw inspiration from The Calculus.

Keywords: Calculus of Consent, James M. Buchanan, Gordon Tullock, Vincent Ostrom, scale-free networks, democratic oligarchy
