Abstract

One of the major steps the independent India took in protecting the rights and dignity of Dalits was the enactment of special laws for the purpose. Despite over sixty years of implementation of such laws and many developmental measures, atrocities against Dalits continue unabated. However, the magnitude of crimes and the extent of conviction rate in cases registered under such laws differ across states. Relying mostly on the government data, this article identifies Uttar Prades to be the state that has best implemented the the special laws and delivered justice to the victims of caste crimes, the Dalits.
