How Different are Islamicate Societies?

Abstract

After 9-11, a new discourse emerged which claimed that contemporary Islamicate compared badly on several indicators – economic development, democracy, women’s rights, and maintaining peace with neighbors – with other developing societies. This essay critiques these claims, where possible by testing them against facts.
