Abstract

Ethnic and religious issues form part of the most recurring phenomena in Nigeria’s body politics. The issue has permeated the nation’s political land scape since the colonial period and up till the present time, there seems to be no solution in sight to the accompanying conflicts of ethnic rivalry and religious intolerance. The dominant and minority ethnic groups treat each other with suspicion and the different religious world view clash at the slightest provocation. It is against this background that this study intends to undertake a critical examination of the current ethnic cum religio-political climate in the country, with specific reference to the incessant ethno-religious crisis that occurred between 2001-2011. An assessment of these crises, as well as their effects on the socio-economic fabric of Nigeria will be carried out, in a view to profer solutions.
