Abstract

Technical Education is considered to be a catalyst for industrial development of a nation. Women participation in technical education plays an important role in the economic growth and development of the country. Lack of adequate studies about participation of women in technical education has resulted in understanding the definite role played by women in the development process. To bridge this gap, a study was envisaged for women students of Degree and Diploma levels who had studied in Karnataka State. The study covered 3 batches of women students who passed during the year 1999-2001 from different Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics located in the state. A questionnaire was mailed to some selected students on random sample basis to get adequate reliable and valid data. The questionnaire covered important issues like, preference of course, main functions performed after graduation and first paid employment details. In addition, issues such as employment prospects and rate of absorption of women graduates are also probed. This paper highlights some of the important findings related to the participation of women in technical education.
