Abstract

A citizen of a State who is not a citizen of the United States, is a citizen of the several States when abroad. This can be seen in the case of Hilton v. Guyot (159 U.S. 113, 1895). In this case defendants are citizens of the State of New York excising their commercial privileges as citizens of the several States. They have a principal place of business in the city of New York and have a storehouse and an agent in Paris, France. According to the Supreme Court of the United States they appeared and carried on litigation in the courts of France.
