Abstract

This article examines key EU principles to combat transnational organised crime, with particular reference to approximation of national criminal laws and procedures, mutual recognition of judicial decisions and the principle of availability (intelligence exchange). While the EU and Member have been instrumental in facilitating these principles, it is argued that the principle of State sovereignty as well as other practical difficulties are still hampering the promotion of effective action against transnational organised crime.
