Abstract
The privilege of re-founding the monastery of Gala – granted by Queen Adelasia in the Byzantine year 6633 (September 1, 1104 – August 31, 1105), mentioned in an authenticated copy in Latin edited by Abbey Filippo Ruffo in 1439 and transcribed incorrectly by Rocco Pirri in Sicilia Sacra – reveals in the complete version that the remarkable quantity of assets, vassals and rights assigned to the Gala monastery (including the faculty to withdraw freely whatever they required from the city of Messina) represent special concessions not found in other documents recording the foundation or re-founding of Greek Orthodox monasteries in northeast Sicily, and which make Gala the most important Greek Orthodox monastery founded or re-founded by the Normans before the institution of the archimandritate of SS. Salvatore in lingua Phari.
