Abstract

Analyzes the hitherto-unknown lifelong correspondence between two very different figures, one a scandal-prone, nonconforming Imagist poet, the other a somewhat inhibited, conventional lawyer who reached the upper levels of his profession. Shows how each needed what the other offered — freedom from inhibition in the one case, discipline and rigor in the other. Shows how excessive regimentation in legal work (formalism) can lead to unhappiness and professional dissatisfaction.

Keywords: legal profession, law and literature, lawyers, happiness studies, Ezra Pound, Archibald MacLeish
